Why the "Rule of 7" is Wrong

For decades, people simply multiplied a dog's age by 7. However, research from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) shows that dogs age much faster in their first two years than humans do. A one-year-old dog has reached a stage of physical maturity roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human teenager. By age two, they are effectively 24 human years old. After that, the rate of aging slows down and depends heavily on the dog's size.

The Formula

Our calculator uses the standard size-stratified formula:

The First Year: 15 human years.
The Second Year: +9 human years (Total 24).
Subsequent Years: Age depends on size category ( $S$ ):

Do small dogs really live longer than large dogs?

Yes, biologically, large dogs age faster. While in most mammals, larger species live longer (like elephants vs. mice), within the dog species, the rapid growth required for large breeds seems to correlate with higher rates of cellular oxidative stress and cancer.

When is a dog considered a 'Senior'?

It depends on size. A Giant breed might be considered senior at age 6, while a Small breed might not reach senior status until age 10 or 11.
